PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a widely used filament in 3D printing. It has several properties that make it attractive to both beginners and experienced users. Here are the main properties of PLA filament:
Biodegradable : PLA is a bioplastic made from renewable resources such as corn, sugar beets or sugar cane. It is more environmentally friendly than other plastics such as ABS, because it is biodegradable under the right conditions.
Low printing temperature : PLA melts at a lower temperature than many other filaments, typically between 180°C and 220°C. This makes it easier to print with and reduces the risk of warping.
No heated print bed needed : Although a heated print bed can be useful to help the filament adhere better, it is not strictly necessary with PLA. This makes PLA suitable for printers without heated print beds.
Low Odor : PLA has a low odor during printing compared to filaments like ABS, which can have a strong chemical smell. This makes it more pleasant to work with indoors.
Strength and stiffness : PLA has a relatively high stiffness, but is less tough than for example ABS or PETG. It can break or crack under pressure, especially with thin parts.
Color and Finish : PLA filament is available in a wide range of colors and can be printed with a nice, smooth finish. This makes it a good choice for aesthetic prints, such as prototypes, models or art objects.
Low Shrinkage : PLA has minimal shrinkage during cooling, which reduces the chance of warping of the printed object. This contributes to the accuracy of the prints.
UV Sensitivity : PLA is sensitive to UV light, which can cause discoloration and weakening over time if exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time.
Lower heat tolerance : PLA has a relatively low glass transition temperature (around 60°C), which means that objects printed from PLA may deform when exposed to higher temperatures, such as in a hot car.
Natural Gloss : PLA often has a slight, natural gloss after printing, giving it an attractive appearance without any additional post-processing.
In short, PLA is easy to use, environmentally friendly and well suited for non-functional or aesthetic objects, but is less suitable for applications requiring extreme strength, toughness or high temperatures.
